I HAVE A 2002 LINCOLN LS V8. EVER ONCE IN AWHILE THE TEMP SPIKES ON THE TEMP GAUGE TO THE MAX FOR NO APPARENT REASON. THE CAR THEN GOES INTO REDUCED OPERATION MODE. IF YOU LET THE CAR SET FOR AWHILE, THE PROBLEM GOES AWAY AND RUNS OKAY.

Could it possible be something like the thermostat getting stuck?

you better get this checked asap because if the gauge is correct, you may be damaging the motor from overheating.

yes, it could be a thermostat.

Check your coolant level . The surge tank is known to leak on this car. When the temp is up verify if the cooling fan is on . If you have a scanner check codes and data .
