I noticed my car was overheating and I went to put coolant in it, but I was having a blonde moment and couldn't find the tank to put it in...don't ask. I put it straight into the radiator.

A couple of days later, I noticed it overheating again. I lifted the hood and found the coolant tank right away and filled it. It was fine for a bit, then I started having overheating issues again.

I decided to change the thermostat, but did not drain the coolant. My car is still overheating, could it be an air pocket? Also, I do smell gas in the oil, so I am assuming the worst, a blown head gasket, but hoping for a more minor issue.
