2002 Kia Spectra want start and backfiring.

Replace a timing belt on a 2002 kia spectra 4 cylinder engine, was driving down the highway the engine just cut of so took the timing belt cover of and the timing belt was half way of the sprockets, when cranking the engine sometime it backfires, when the engine cut of driving will the timing belt hurt anythings are will it damage the valve how can I find out have it done any damage.

This is an inteference engine and timing belt breaking can result in damage to the valves. Check the valve lash clearance should allow you to find out if any valves are bent.

The timing belt is not broke it just about half way of the sprockets why is it half way of the sprocket and how do I check valve lash.

Timing belt need not be broken, If any of the belt tooth is stripped, that could be worse than breaking off completely.

You would nee to remove the valve cover and measure the clearance between the cam and cam lobes.
