I have replaced the left front wheel bearings and still have a lot of play in the front wheel. There is a spacer ring between the two inner bearing cones. I'm not sure if I put it in the right place. The wheel nut will not tighten the bearings.I can't find a drawing to show the correct placement. The layout of the bearings is inner cone, outer race, outer race, inner cone. Is the ring not letting the two cone ride snugly to the races?

Be sure the play is not from the suspension

See the diagrams below for adjusting/setting the pre-load on the front wheel bearings

On the 2002 Kia Rio there are two bearings. They are two cone & race bearings. They are not the one piece roller bearings seen on most front wheel drive cars.

If correct bearings are fitted and adjusted correctly any movement may be ball joints, check this.
