I bought a 2002 jeep liberty sport with a blown motor from a friend(some friend). I had a local mechanic install a new motor in the car, plus it needed a new intake and new oil pan. The car runs and drives great, the problem is that it will not idle properly and stalls frequently at idle, it always starts right back up. The mechanic has put in a new battery, throttle sensors, knock sensors, iac valve, computer and reflashed the computer. He checked out the catalytic converter. We are thinking maybe a wiring harness problem? The car runs fine but when u come to a stop the motor fluctuates between 500 and 1000 rpm and finally stalls. Any ideas?

Are there any codes set in the computer? Also has anyone checked for a vacuum leak yet?

I would have a smoke test done to look for vacuum leaks. They inject smoke into the vacuum system and watch for smoke escaping from vacuum leak sources. Its the best way to look for vacuum leaks.

The problem is it idles fine some of the time. Today I drove for probably 25 minutes before it had problems, it stalled as I made a turn. Then started right back up, stalled at the next 3 stop signs, then idled between 500-1000 after that but didnt stall again. I assumed a new engine wouldnt have compression problems but ill check it out

If the problem is intermittent I wouldn't suspect compression then also anything is possible new or remanufacturered engine or anything else. I have seen brand new cars right off the car hauler with issues.I have seen coolant temp sensors and crankshaft position sensors do some crazy things and never set any codes. Has anyone checked to make sure the coolant temp sensor is reading correctly from cold to normal operating temp?
