Just bought a 2002 honda civic with 1.7 vtech engine. Took it to have an oil change and the shop wanted to put 10-40 weight oil in. The oil cap states 5-20W so can anyone tell me if the 10-40W is ok to use?

I agree, but you can use the heaver oil depending on the ambient temperature and the condition of the engine, if you have not had any problems stay with what you are using.
