Transmission kicking out of gear

2002 Honda Civic when driving the vehicle and reaching a speed of about 40 mph the vehicle kicks out of drive into neutral.

Does the selector physically move up into neutral? If so, check out the shifter cable.

Or does the shifter still stay in D but it feels like you're in neutral? If that's the cause, the transmission is slipping, which means you might have serious internal damage.
