Sand in air intake?

Honda accord 2002 ( 160000 miles ) manual transmission found after sand storm and rpm needle keep on going up and down till i stopped the engine many times.

Changed the air in take filter, the condition remained for another half an hour and then rpm is back to normal. this happened on the highway when I was going on 300 mile trip this week.

it may be ok, but check yoru air duct to make sure there are no holes in it as this can effect it.make sure maf is clean
