2002 Holden Commodore Gear box

My vu ss 02 had very tight gear box, took 2 hands to change into gear to get home. I took it to my mechanic to find out problem. He took gearbox out and found metal stuck to the magnet without pulling the whole thing apart. He gave me the choice to either get gearbox replacement kit or buy a new or second hand gearbox. What would be my best option for money?

With out seeing this it is a bit hard to say, but any metal coming from the transmission is not a good thing, ideally I would like to pull and strip and see what the problem is, but a quick fix will be a second hand transmission.
