2002 Holden Calais Temp fluctuation

Temp gauge rises to halfway when warm, then drops to cold and the engine light comes on and fans kick in. The revs also rise to 1500 rpm on idle. After around 30 seconds, everything goes back to normal until the cycle starts again and it all repeats.
Your advice would be greatly appreciated

Check for a blocked radiator and make sure that the water pump has not had the impeller eaten away as this is a common problem if wrong coolant or no coolant is used
