Is there a check engine light also on? The problem could be as simple as a shift solenoid, or as complex as internal transmission problem. If there is a check engine light, there may be a code that directly relates. Next step would be to function test solenoids, and review scan tool data to determine if a shift is being commanded and just not occurring.

Yes, check engine light has come on. What came on before that was abs light and brake light. But they went off. We changed fuel filter 1st. After 16hrs was out driving and the engine shut down. Had to be towed home. Did not hear fuel pump engaging so got a aftermarket one. When dropped fuel tank found a lot of sand in tank. Cleaned tank out and dried. Installed new pump drove for 36hrs and now dont want to shift out of first.(Loosing power) any ideas. Will get codes shortly.

The codes may or may not indicate a direction, but they would be a necessary ingredient.
