oil changed , but dipstick shows nothing

i have a 2002 , windstar , i changed the oil last night , made sure bolt and filter were tight .. and when i checked the dipstick it shows nothing and the tappets are rattling . the oil was very dirty was changed last in february . when doing the oil filter i found it was very loose. any ideas to help me ?? thank you for your time

the oil may be trapped up in the valve cover not going down to the oil pan.
the return holes may be clogged with sludge from not servicing it regularly.
