IM wondering what this hose is for and why its leaking coolant

I have a 02 ford ranger 4cyl 2.3L and there is a 1/2" tube coming out of my firewall by the heater core that is leaking coolant

You sure its not the heater control valve bypass hose tubing

That is the heater control valve.

And since its leaking all the time im guessing I need to new heater core?

I think you're right. It looks like the drain tube below the control valve is wet. There used to be a 4" rubber hose hanging down from it to help keep debris and cold air out.

I don't know what an engine has to do with a heater core.
