I have a deep pan transmission in a 2002 Ranger and change the trans filter every 40,000 miles. Its take exactly 5 quarts, each and every time.

Mysticdesertrat@gmail.com I think your right and I’m hoping your right I just did the filter service change for my 2004 Ford ranger 4wd auto transmission and my mechanic added 5.2 quarts i was afraid he overfilled it so are you sure that the deep pan ones take 5 quarts I’m really concerned.

Just to clear this up. The entire unit (both 5R44 and 55E) takes 10 quarts when you are rebuilding the unit and have to completely fill it.

However, if you are just dropping the pan and changing the filter then it will normally take about half of the total capacity. You will need to reinstall the pan and then put about 3 quarts in to fill the pan and then you start the engine and let it warm up. Then check the level and add one quart. Then you need to run it through the gears and check the level again. More than likely you will end up being around 5 quarts, but each level is going to be different as you never know how much fluid remains in the converter and if the transmission was low to start.

Here is a guide that will help with this:

If you follow this process, then it doesn't matter how much the unit takes because it will take what it takes. Let us know if you have other questions. Thanks

Mopar, thanks for the answer. after checking transmission fluid my fluid sits at the top of the hatch markings, I think it’s 0.7 quarts too much. I’m going to suck some out my mechanic added 5.3 quarts which is too much 4.7 is what it needs I think based on what I have experienced the last few days and is using Valvoline ATF max life. okay you say Motocraft but Valvoline front my understanding is also okay.

Yes. You only need Mercon 5 fluid. Valvoline is just fine and used it many times.

Thanks for the update. let us know what other questions you have. Thanks
