when applying the brakes, it juddered and took longer to stop. when stationary, I pumped the pedal and there was a noise of escaping air (hissing) and brake pedal went hard. any ideas? could it be the (expensive) servo?

we have no info on this car however you may have a twofold problem here. the juddering as you call it may be the rotors are warped and you may need a brake job done on the car also the hissing you hear may be form aleaky power brake booster. we are in u.s. so don't know prices in other countries.
