engine noise

2002 ford focus 2.0 spi engine. when car starts, a loud metal on metal sound comes from the transmission side of the engine. could the starter be sticking?

Could be but more likely there are loose bolts holding the flex plate to the torque converter. One of them could be backed out and hitting on the inspection cover.

Another problem is a cracked flex plate. They often cause a banging noise.
