2002 Ford Focus Car Run Without Thermostat Top Hose On Cover Pointing Thing

Can the car be run without thermostat top hose on cover? The pointing thing broke off and water come out once it head ups. Since then the car runs cold and shows normal when I slow or stop. At times will run hot if stopped.
