Wires don't melt. That's what fuses and circuit breakers are for. With the engine not running, watch the brightness of the dome light when you activate the window switch. As a general rule, if the light dims a very little bit, the circuitry is good. The lower system voltage proves the window circuit is drawing current. The motor or the regulator could be binding. This is real common now with regulators that use cables and plastic pulleys.
If the dome light doesn't dim, it's more likely to be a wiring problem. If all of the windows are dead, look for broken wires between the driver's door hinges. If only the driver's window is dead, suspect the switch or motor. In that case, you're going to have to remove the trim panel and measure voltages to diagnose the cause of the problem.
