I bought a used 2002 Neon ES manual transmission from a guy, said everything on it was fine. I took it for a test drive and it was great. I bought it with about 88,000 miles on it. A Few days later I started to notice a grinding noise when I accelerated. It doesn't make the noise when I shift gears, but when I hard accelerate after I shift gears. For Example: I am driving 30mph, I hit 35 and I shift to 4th gear, as I am accelerating up I hear a grinding noise. The clutch feels fine and it doesn't drive weird, it just makes this awful noise. It doesn't matter what speed I go, if I hard press the gas pedal I hear this noise

Noise are almost impossible to diagnose without the physical vehicle so your best bet is to get someone to have a test drive and locate the source.

Usually anything to do with acceleration means there is additional torsional stress on the engine and drive trains and components such as engine mounts, axles, suspension components are the things to look at.
