The only way to find a small leak in the evaporative emissions system is with a smoke machine. You might find one at an auto parts store that rents or borrows tools. With it you can inject white non-toxic smoke under two pounds of pressure, then watch for where it sneaks out. Common causes are loose hose clamps and cracked rubber hoses. Also look at the purge solenoid.
Never had to hunt for the canister. It should be shown on the under-hood emissions sticker that shows the vacuum hose routing.
