How do I change the power steering belt tensioner on a my car. bearings are bad

WARNING:Do not remove A/C belt tensioner locking bolt without first holding the tensioner with a 1/2" drive breaker bar, as personal injury could result.

NOTE:The A/C drive belt self tensioner is NOT a dynamic tensioner. After adjustment the tensioner bracket bolts are tightened. The torsion spring is no longer responsible for tensioning the A/C belt. The torsion spring is only used for initial belt tensioning.

Verify that torsion spring position is in the new belt position before installing a NEW belt. See Fig. 1 . If torsion spring is not in the new belt position, follow steps 1 -7 to change the tensioner spring from the USED belt position to the NEW belt position.
Insert a 1/2" drive breaker bar into the square opening on the tensioner. Hold counterclockwise pressure on tensioner while removing the locking bolt. See Fig. 2 .
Carefully release spring load of the torsion spring on the tensioner.
Remove pivot bolt, tensioner, and spring from front timing cover.
Insert spring arm into the NEW belt position on the tensioner. See Fig. 1 .
Install torsion spring, tensioner, and pivot bolt.
Install pivot bolt. Tighten only finger tight, at this time.
Using a 1/2" drive breaker bar, apply counter-clockwise pressure until locking bolt can be installed.
Install the NEW belt by rotating the tensioner counterclockwise until the NEW belt can be installed on pulleys.
Release tensioner and remove breaker bar. Belt is automatically adjusted with the tensioner's torsion spring.
Tighten tensioner locking bolt and pivot bolt to 250 in. lbs. (28 Nm).
Install generator/power steering belt.

broke tensioner arm need to replace entire part.

Make sure you locate the Serpentine Belt Routing Sticker before you proceed. If not make an excellent drawing and take a GOOD Picture. Do NOT try to just remember how it goes back on. Should be a 15mm wrench to loosen tensioner to remove belt. Locate mounting bolts to tensioner and remove, replace with NEW tensioner tighten bolts then reroute belt. then using 15mm pull tensioner and install belt in correct route. Remove all tools and body parts from engine bay. Do not start engine if anyone is in the vicinity of engine bay. Belt may fly off if you did not do it right .start car, if it doesn't fly off, visually inspect belt for proper operation. your done. good job!

REMOVAL - POWER STEERING PUMP

NOTE: Before proceeding with this procedure, Refer to Service Precautions .
Remove battery cable from the negative post on the battery.
Siphon as much fluid as possible from the power steering fluid reservoir.
Remove the power steering pump drive belt from the power steering pump pulley.
Remove the hose clamp securing the return hose to the power steering fluid reservoir. Slide the hose off the end of the reservoir fitting (Fig. 3).
Back out the tube nut securing the power steering fluid pressure hose to the power steering pump (Fig. 3), then remove the hose from the pump.
Remove the mounting bolt securing the support bracket to the rear of the power steering pump (Fig. 4).
Loosen the two mounting bolts securing the support bracket to the engine block (Fig. 4).
Remove the three mounting bolts holding the power steering pump to the cast bracket (Fig. 5). Access to the mounting bolts can be achieved through the holes in the pump pulley.

NOTE: It may be necessary to remove the screw holding the A/C line routing clamp to the radiator upper closure panel (Fig. 6).
Remove the power steering pump with reservoir from the engine.
For transferal of the power steering pump pulley, Refer to PUMP - DISASSEMBLY.

no not the power steering pump. i want to remove the power steering/air conditioning compressor TENSIONER so i can change the TENSIONER PULLEY

Im trying to raise/lower the motor to get to the bolts but it only can raise/lower a little where I still cant access the bolts and it doesnt look like it has much room to take off right side motor mount

How do I change the Dodge Neon power steering BELT TENSIONER. While I was driving my car the power steerin belt pop out and the driving wheel started becoming very hard to drive. And the belt tensioner seems to be broken.

The tensioner is serviced with the engine mount bracket assembly. The tensioner pulley itself can be serviced separately.

Hello –

Are you talking about the bolt that the red arrow is pointing too? Go to AutoZone and use the tool check out program and you can check out a belt tensioner tool. Very long and thin and it has various size sockets with it

Is this what you are talking about – you are trying to take the belt off?

Four cylinder front wheel drive automatic 140,000 miles.

I need to change the serpentine belt for the power steering, A/C and it appears impossible? I have been able to 'back off' the spring loaded tension-er with a wrench or pry bar with other cars to allow removal/replacement, but this one refuses to move more than a half an inch before the upper section (where the tab' is) begins hitting the power steering pulley.

How is this one done?

Have you tried going the other direction with it? From what I can tell it looks like that is how it works.

If the belt tension-er is moved the opposite direction it only applies more pressure to the belt. There must be something wrong with the tension-er alignment if the standard procedure is to back it off to allow changing of the belt. Is that what the service manual says to do? If so do I need to remove the belt and replace the tension-er? If so, what is the procedure to do that?

The diagram you sent is what I assumed. But could not accomplish due to the tension-er hitting the power steering belt pulley as I attempted to back it off. The tension-er is too close to the engine to clear the pulley.
Next question, Should I remove the tension-er to replace it, shim it out? or is it better to simply adjust the placement of the pulley on the power steering?

Okay, when you have the tension-er as far it will go can you get the belt off the tension-er sense there is no lip on it? If so then that is how you will remove the belt. Do not shim anything as this will put the belt out of alignment and you will go through belts.
