should my brake rotors have a ridge around the outside edge?

This is a sign of normal rotor wear, this is not a problem itself, but it is a sign that the rotors may be due for re machining or replacing if they are under size, (min thickness) have a mechanic measure the rotors and if under size have them replaced with new pads.

Take the car to a mechanic and get them to back off the wheel nuts, then just do them up by hand (nip them safely) so you can drive home safely and then remove they your self.
