Was it raining or snowing at the time? Has the level gone down in the coolant reservoir? If it has, you likely have a leak that must be diagnosed immediately before the engine overheats. Overheating often leads to a warped cylinder head or leaking head gasket, and very expensive repairs. Better to have a mechanic look at it to avoid more costly repairs from ignoring it.
