When i drive my car over 40 mph a hour and then every time I slow down at 20mph the car goes into 1rst so then i must shut car off .restart it then it will shift. Could it be my dead battery or shoft solnoid

Defaulting to second gear is "limp mode" which allows you to drive slowly to a repair shop without needing a tow truck. The place to start is by having the diagnostic fault codes read and recorded. Those will indicate the circuit or system that needs further diagnosis.
