I got a 2002 chevy silverado hd2500 and have the 6000 engine with the piston slap problem and just now it's started using a lot of oil it's got 64000 miles on it and using a quart of oil every 400-600 miles. Would a heavier oil help or using a different type oil help any. It doesn't seem to burn or smoke and no oil on the ground it just uses a lot of oil.

It is burning it. You just don't see it. The problem is this. If you use a heaver oil, it may slow down some of the consumption, but then it takes longer for the oil to get to the bearings on cold starts. I don't know where you live, but based on the temperatures, check the owner's manual for recommended oil weights. Go with the heaviest that they recommend for the temps you live in. AS far as the conventional -vs- synthetic, they will both get used.

Hey guys thanks for the advise, I checked with a dealer mechanic and he said for that type engine( the Vortex 6000) it's not unusual to use a quart every 1200 miles. They said if I do change oil to just upgrade to Mobil one.I'll just have to check more often I guess.

Mobil 1 is good oil; however, if he is recommending Mobil 1 Synthetic, it is very expensive. It will still burn like the conventional motor oil.

Regardless, let us know if you have other questions.
