The display window that indicates the number of miles on the vehicle, the trip meter and the P, R, N, D, 1, 2, 3 display no longer works. I use to be able to tap on the plastic covering and it would light up, but that has ceased to do the trick. Everything else works. I was told that I would have to replace the entire BCM and have it re-programmed at the dealership. I was wondering if that is, indeed, the case OR if it might be one or both of the fuses for the BCM that might no longer be functional. I will not be able to get a MA inspection sticker because the mechanic will not be able to ascertain the exact mileage on my vehicle.

So, is it absolutely the BCM, or could it be something less expensive?

I've seen a lot of issues with these instrument clusters. I would not suspect the BCM at the cause but the instrument cluster itself. Tapping the cluster is a sign that the display has failed or has a poor electrical connection within the display circuit.
Search around the Internet for instrument cluster repair because there are few places that can repair these clusters
If no one can help you that route you may need to go through a business to verify the odometer so the new one or refurbished or repaired unit will have the correct mileage.
Definitely not the BCM on this one.
