I have a 2002 chevy cavalier 2 dr sport with 110,000mi + which needs new struts in the back and idols hard with a slight smell coming from the engine.
Is it feesable to repair or just use this car to get a newer used one? I'm really stuck in a rut but can't afford for my car to give up on me because of work.

It depends on whether you are happy with the car or not. If you can't afford the struts right away, as long as they aren't leaking you can drive it for a while til you can. Your post only came part way through about he idle, take some choke cleaner and clean teh throttleplateon both side as well as iac-it's an oblong holeon throttle plate. Do that with engine off it will be hardto start after. Make sure all duct work is connected. If you don't know what the throttle plate is go to tune up on the site her eand it will show you.
