2001 S80 timing belt

Should I change the water pump when replacing the timing belt on a 2001 Volvo S80? The Volvo dealership says the water pump should last the life of the engine and does not need to be replaced unless it is leaking.

I would never say a water pump would last the life of the engine that is really going out on a limb any part can fail anytime without warning.Since it's ran by the timing belt if it fail's it could damage the belt or the engine.If you don't replace it when they do the belt will they put in writing that if it fail's and cause's damage they will take care of it for free?I doubt it your best bet and a little cheap insurance would be to just have it changed with the belt just to be on the safe side.That is my advice to you.

I agree with saturntech9 though water pumps seldom fails if there are no coolant losses issues and coolant had been used regularly, BUT based on experience, they tend to fail after timing belt replacement.
