engine reves

engine revs while idling it goes between .5 to 1 and on some occasions it has revved up to 2 and then dropped to 0 and stalled

Check the idle air control valve/actuator

There is no idle air control valve on this vehicles. The throttle is an electronic throttle module which is a drive by wire. You can try to remove the throttle and clean it out first along with cleaning the pcv system. If that does not work then your throttle will need to be replaced. Call Volvo to see if you are still within the 10 year/200k mile replacement warranty? You can even have it diagnosed for free if the dealership is participating in the Volvo service for life program. What you would get is a free scan of the fault codes and they should run a free throttle test on the vehicle. Beyonde that then they will advise that they will need to charge you for further diagnostic like installing a break out box to make some signal measurements?
