There is no crank sensor on an 01 Passat V6 according to my reference material. There are, however, 2 camshaft position sensors. One is located on the front of the right cylinder head, just behind the timing cover and the other is located on the rear of the left cylinder head.
If you have a multimeter you can check for power to the ignition coil. Set the meter to read 20VDC and insert/connect the leads to the terminals on the coil, set the meter so you can read it from inside and crank the engine over. You can also have a helper crank it while you hold the meter. If there is no power, check the fuses. Attached is a diagram of the engine compartment showing the locations of the coil and engine control module. Rent/borrow a code scan tool and see if the control module has any error codes stored. Use the meter to check the resistance of plug and coil wires, they should have between 4 and 6 kohms of resistance. You will need to remove the wires to check this.
