car will not stay running

i have a 2001 jetta glx vr6 now i bought a used cluster because my old on is having problems but when i put it in the car will not stay running what can i do. the car has a immobilizer in it but the dealer said i would have to buy a new cluster after they told me that i can buy a used one and put it right in
