engine moving

i have a 2001 vw jetta 2.0L Automatic but the engine moves back and forth when i go from parking into reverse and N to D? and its going through a lot of gas on average i get 19 mpg city driving and Interstate?

it's normal for the engine to move on it's mounts when going from forward to reverse or opposite or from neutral/park to either. if it makes a noticable clunk noise doing so a mount may be broken. they are usually safety restricted so they can only go so far off their center position. which allows you to still drive until fixed.
