Have to rev the engine for reverse to engage, what's happening?

2001 VW golf tdi auto 160k miles
When I put the car in reverse it doesn't stick at first, if I rev the engine to about 2000 rpms it catches and works perfectly. Putting it from drive first and then reverse often helps but I want to know what's happening, any help?

seal failure in the trans. you need a trans shop to verify.
