left indicator wont work

golf mk 4 , 1.4l ,x reg
left indicator will not work .fast clicking sound can be heard on the dash hazard relay.tried to change it ,same problem .
The right indicator works and when hazards are on all 3 lights are working perfect .
What could be the problem?

I had this on my golf mk4 , finally traced it to the front passenger foot well there are block: connectors for the wiring harness and one of the female spade connectors had snapped , there is also block connectors in the side panel in the back passenger side just above the parcel shelf , these can become wet with water from the rear wash wiper tubing connector in the roof lining which is a common fault on golfs, hope this helps
