2001 Volkswagen Golf Car Had Service Yesterday Cambelt Replaced Last Night

My car had a service yesterday and the cambelt was replaced. Last night while driving the car cut-out on 2 occasions. Today the battery light stays on and warning says "Alternator Workshop!" What does this mean? Can I drive the car. Is there something that the mechanic had faulted on?

have your charging system checked and battery most auto parts stores do it for free or sears/tire stores
