2001 Volkswagen Golf brake lights

The brake lights on my Golf TdI are not working. I have checked the bulbs and they work, I have replaced the brake light switch twice, thinking the one I originally was defective, but still I have no brake lights. What else could be the problem.

use a test light to ck. to see if u are getting power to the brake light switch for starters.then come back.
