I have replaced the engine and it doesn't have a EGR valve, so the ECU is searching for the EGR, this is causing the engine to cut out on starting. After roughly three attempts the engine will run but will cause the engine management light to come on. If I was to buy a reprogrammed ECU, will this fix the problem? As I don't know if the reprogrammed ECU will search for the EGR valve.

You will have to ask this of the company that will do a re program, but I doubt that it will, any way if your car was designed for an EGR system, you will now be contravening your local emission control requirements, if you are in the UK you will fail the MOT inspection, you should look into this further before spending any more money, you may find that you will be required to replace the engine to suit the EGR requirements.
