2001 Toyota Celica 6 SPEED TRANSMISSION STANDARD GTS

If 6th gear is popping out, that means an internal fault and most likely the synchros but when you have 3rd gear not being able to be engaged, it can mean something is loose/worn inside the trans and this can cause both symptoms.

Check with the junk yard and if they have one used trans that is priced reasonably, you can consider replacing the trans instead of rebuilding it.

Junk yard no tranny, got 5 tranny shops scratching their heads, going lady, we can't find one any where. Standard transmissions don't need replacing, so one will need to be built.

Synchros expensive, guy told me if you don't know what you're doing, this can get your lunch, however no price quote on replacing synchros.

Guy said, new one or let me break this tranny down and see what is all going on. He said, can't tell you what I don't know, until I take a look inside.

Can loose mounts be the reason for gear popping out, bearings, or linkage rods?

Sounds like I just need to junk this car. grrr

I can shift all the gears great when the car is off, just wish this 6th gear would not pop out, can go for miles and it not do it, then boom pops out, once pops out, want stay engaged for just few seconds.

The symptoms do indicate the trans has an internal fault and without stripping it down, it is not possible to know the extent of the damage and parts replacement required. There is a possibility it might be a simple job of tightening a lock nut and presto, the trans is as good as new.

Check with the mechanic to see if he is willing to remove the transaxle case cover to find out if the lock nut for the output shaft has worked itself loose. When this nut works itself loose, you get the symptoms described.

This job can be done on vehicle without the necessity to remove the transmission from vehicle and should be very much cheaper.

Sorry, there was an error in the diagrams. Those were for the 5 speed trans. Here are the correct ones.
