Forgot to check the oil for a while. Service Engine light came on. No noises. Stopped off, was really low - not on stick, and could barely get the cap off. Added oil. running great, light still on. drove home 7 miles. also got muffler 100 miles ago. is car safe to drive if it is running smooth and not heating up?

Well - hard to say if you did any damage - some may be there. But if it is driving okay then you may be okay. No lifter noise? No overheat? Go to AutoZone and they can check your codes for free then clear them and the light should go off. Make sure you check your oil at every gas fill. Just a good reminder. You are there.
