How do you removal the center cover to remove.

How do you removal the center cover to remove the air bag? The back cover will not release from the leather cover. Got the column taken apart but I am stuck on these two items. I am trying to replace the cruise control lever.

Which air bag? Drivers side is bolted from the rear of the steering wheel

Steering wheel airbag. Cannot get the back side cover lose from the front leather cover.

Do you absolutely need the specialty tool I read about in the Mitchell catalog? Is there an easier way? Just need some advice from someone? I got the car dismantled (covers top & bottom, lower dash, etc) removed. Just cannot get the rear steering wheel cover lose and the leather front(air bag) lose.
