car trouble

My car is an 01 Aurora went to lunch at noon came back at 1 got off work at 2 tried to start it but didnt start had to put so gas when i started it to keep it running but the engine shuts off but EVERYTHING else is still on the heat lights radio etc every time i try to switch gears like R and D i have to stay constantly on the gas to keep it going why is that???

Most likely a vacuum leak. Check for cracked hoses. If you can get it to idle in park, do so, open the hood, and start pouring water on the throttle body where it connects to the intake manifold (don't douse it, just keep pouring enough to keep it covered). If this affects the way that the engine idles, then there is a leak in one of those seals.

It could also be the intake manifold gasket is leaking, which is problematic in these cars.
