How do you determine that a wheelbearing hub needs to be replaced? Other than listening for a whining sound?

I have looked at several wheel bearing and there does not appear to be any noticeable problems.

We diagnose hub bearings by sound and play. Raise the front end, grasp the affected wheel at the top and bottom and rock it back and forth. It shouldn't move.
