Car has high RPMs and low MPH

Hello. My 2001 Nissan Xterra (4WD) has been dragging recently. I had a problem where i started the car and when i shifted it into any gear besides neutral, it shut off. Once the car warmed up, I was able to drive normally. However, now the car displays really high rpms at low speeds before shifting to a normal rpm (i.e., when driving 20 mph down a residential street, the car rapidly climbs to 4RPMs and then shifts gears to 1-2 RPMs). Any thoughts on what service for my car? I am away and need to quickly drop by a mechanic/auto repair before I start my workweek. Thank you in advance!

I would be starting with a diagnostic scan, not all faults will set a MIL check light, start here and report any codes in the system here for further assistance.

Thanks! I got a diagnostic recently and everything was A-OK...was a bit surprised as I had not done any major road trips/put any heavy mileage on my car following this. But I will drop it to the shop Monday morning.

Just re check that there are no loose or damaged vacuum lines as well,

Will do. I had to tow my car with a UHaul about 150 miles recently for a move, so there may have been some damage. Would that have affected the vacuum lines?

normally no, as these are all up around the manifold and out of harms way, they normally perish and split with engine heat.

Ok yes, Ill report back on the diagnostic. I was thinking of dropping my car at Aamco instead of my usual mechanic as I figured they could be quick in servicing and turnaround - but Im worried about if this is a severe problem they would overcharge? Should I just stick to my usual mechanic and wait it out?

Your usual mechanic should be fine, they will have any past history and i feel you will get better service from a private operator, if you have been using him for some time go there.
