when my engine is cold i can get reverse gear no problems
but when the engine has warmed up and i try to put it in reverse it makes a crunching sound

Check the clutch pedal height.
If pedal height is good, the problem should be with the clutch disk, it is moving back too slowly due to lack of lubrication on the cluch shaft.
Try changing the trnsmission gear oil and see if it helps.
