The reverse gear on my 2001 Nissan Maxima occasionally will take 40 seconds or so before it goes into gear. Lately, the same thing happens when I try and go forward in the 1st to 2nd gear mode. But again, not always.

Question: What could be the cause? What is the remedy to fix the issue?

check fluid level if you can and if fluid is brown get it replaced. your trans could be in teh early stages of failure. Or you may have a valve or seal hanging up or going bad.
