We just got back from driving 500 miles from vacation, when we got into our town the car started making a scratching noise while in gear. When you put the car in neutral the noise goes away. Also when you are in gear and driving the noise seems to lessen but will build back up if you shift gears. Any advise as to what this may be would be wonderful!

Sorry may be describing it incorrectly, I suppose it could be described as a grinding noise.

Maybe input shaft bearing failure so higher gear the less grinding? if yes then input bearing. Trans full of oil?

Since the noise has started have not gone above 3rd gear since have just been around town but it does seem to be less in 3rd than in 1st or 2nd gear yes. All fluids were checked before going on vacation.
