How does the car run? Is the check engine light on? If it is, what is the code?

When was the last time you had a tune up?

My concern is the backfiring in the intake may damage the mass air flow sensor. It does not like sudden pressure and fire. The timing could be retarded causing the backfiring as well.

I did not understand the first part of your reply. The backfire happens in the exhaust. I will check the timing.
