Hi 21 year old with a 2001 Mitsubishi 2.4L

My car had been off the road for 8 months due to crack in the intake manifold. This crack was caused by heavy engine vibrations (to the point my dashboard has a couple cracks) My dash, glove box, and steering wheel would all shake. In idle and 0 to low rpm acceleration.

I recently replaced the intake manifold and I changed all engine/transmission mounts.
Now I have steady air flow with new manifold which is nice but all the engine/transmission mounts are doing now is (in my opinion) restraining the vibrations which still occur.
I still 'hear' vibrations (especially during acceleration) and I 'feel' vibrations in my gas pedal.

Placing my hand on intake manifold when car is on i feel it shaking (vibrating) and I don't want another manifold to crack. My last guess is a harmonic balancer? Anyone have a better idea on what is causing this disturbance? All I can find is outdated forums with no definite answers. Thank you!

So there is a balance shaft belt that sounds like it has slipped and now it causing the vibration instead of stopping it. Here is a guide that shows the belt and timing,

https://www.2carpros.com/diagrams/mitsubishi/galant/2001

Can you take the engine front off and check the timing?

Please let us know what happens.

Cheers

Shakes or Wobbles problem

When I am idling or when the AC is on my car vibrates a good bit, but it does not stall or anything of that nature, what could it be?

I suppose your idle speed is a little bit low. Normally idling speed for a maunal transmission car is around 800rpm and 850rpm for an automatic transmission.

I have a Mitsubishi Galant year 2000. The engine vibrates at high frequency on idle and in motion. At Idling the idling the rpm indicator seems to be OK between 500 -750. The motor mounting have been replaced. When i give the car power ( stepping on acc peddle hard) a foul smell come from the exhaust. what could be the problem ?

Hi there,

your engine runs a balance shaft via a separate timing belt, if this has failed the engine will run but with a vibration, as for the smell, a faulty cat converter, contaminated fuel could be your problem, i would also do a diagnostic scan as well, start here.

Engine Performance problem
2000 Mitsubishi Galant 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic
----------------------------------------------------------------
engine began to shake and run rough, eventully shutting off. when trying to restart the engine shakes but will not start. this is the second time I had this trouble. The first time was very costly. The mechanic said it was the intake and charged me over 2200.00

sounds like it may be being starved of fuel, get a fuel pressure test done on it, if you cn get it running again spray around the manifold with carb cleaner, if idle changes while spray is being sprayed on manifold and around its base and throttle body, then it needs to have some work done on it.

dont go to the guy that charged 2200 for the intake repair, thats highway robbery.
