hard break peddle

2001 MERCURY SABLE
150,000 MILES • 6 CYL • 2WD • AUTOMATIC

The car will stop at times but,the pedal will get hard and it will wistel.I looked at the calipers,air valve and pads.Could it be the booster,master cylinder or the pump?

Before replacing the booster, check to make sure the vacuum hose to it is not damaged, dry rotted, cracked, or loose. Also, I recommend have a vacuum test done on it to see if can maintain vacuum. If it doesn't hold, replace it. If it does hold vacuum, then it is time to look other places.

on a reguler brake system this would indercate a vac leak to the booster if it had a vac booster ford had a hydrulic power boost assist but you have a 2001 merc this car should have come with abs (anti lock system) your broblem might be in the abs unit.
