3.0 engine noise

i have a 2001 mercury sable with the 24 v v6 it knocks on cold startup it doesnt make any other sounds at any time just at startup when its cold, im thinking its a dry start up condition, what causes that and what can i do to fix it before it causes damage to my engine

How long does it knock?

about 4 or 5 seconds, not long at all seems like just long enough to get oil moving

Make sure you are using the proper weight oil (5W30) and make sure the oil filter that you purchase has an anti flowback valve.
